Language Rules

We see many young children use offensive language, sometimes looking for attention and sometimes not having the ability to discern that it is not appropriate for their own use. Schools today may have no-tolerance policies for violent language, like "I'm gonna kill you", that children may hear on tv or in life then repeat when they get angry. Similarly, cursing is not generally acceptable language, yet children are hearing it everyday in many environments. Young boys typically enjoy making noises or talking about bathroom functions. While that may be developmentally normal, this behavior may result in consequences both at home and at school.

This song was written to help the child remember that just because they hear someone else say something, that does not mean it is okay for them to repeat it. In our practice, we set up a reinforcement system to help the child. For home or school use, you may want to establish some token system, such as putting a quarter into a jar every time an infraction occurs. To focus on the positive, every day the child is able to maintain appropriate language, they may receive a special reward, such as extra play time, a treat, choice of a television program to watch, etc. It is recommended that all members of the classroom or household participate in the plan.
